Emerald Isle, N.C. (May 30, 2019) — Four high school students from Carteret County, North Carolina, have been awarded $2500 scholarships towards their college tuition by Transportation Impact and First Flight Solutions.

The successful applicants are Ashley Crane of Croatan High School, who will attend UNC Wilmington in fall 2019; Emmanuel Barias of Swansboro High School, who will attend Campbell University in fall 2019; Savannah Grace Parker of West Carteret High School, who will attend UNC Chapel Hill in fall 2019; and Chloe Williamson of East Carteret High School, who will choose between Carteret Community College, Wingate, and East Carolina  in fall 2019.

Each year, the Transportation Impact and First Flight Solutions Scholarship is awarded to Carteret County students who wow the scholarship committee with their high school achievements and their future goals. Each awardee must demonstrate the companies’ five core values of work ethic, integrity, professionalism, passion, and perfection, and they must also have a heart for philanthropy.

“Every one of these students demonstrated incredible determination and heart,” said Travis Burt, Co-Founder at Transportation Impact. “It humbled all of us to learn their stories and to see the passion that they have for making a difference in this world. We are grateful to play a small part in helping them reach their goals.”

Savannah Grace Parker intends to do a dual degree in five years with a BS in Environmental Science and an MA in Mass Communication. Upon graduation, she will work to change the way we think about environmental issues and show North Carolinians that sustainability is economically feasible.

Emmanuel Barias will major in Mechanical Engineering with the life goal of helping to engineer a spacecraft that can travel great distances in a short amount of time and make round trips, while using a feasible amount of energy.

Chloe Williamson plans to major in Biology and then attend Dental School. Her goal in life is to help as many people as possible, and she sees dentistry as a profession in which she can help people in a tangible and necessary way.

Ashley Crane will earn a BA in Criminology/Criminal Justice and then enter a profession that intervenes to protect innocent people in situations where their home life is unstable or dangerous.

To be considered for the scholarship, students must submit a written application. The applications are reviewed by a committee consisting of one employee from each company department along with the leadership team. Five applicants from each school are then chosen for 30-minute interviews. The application and interview scores are combined to determine the winners. This year 42 students applied for the scholarship.

“Being a part of the scholarship committee this year was a rewarding process that allowed us to meet so many dedicated, intelligent students. I love that we are able to alleviate some of the stress students face going into college,” said Veronica Gulliksen, Business Analyst at Transportation Impact.
