Emerald Isle, N.C. (June 1, 2017) – Transportation Impact is proud to announce that it has been ranked among the top companies to work for in 2017 by Inc.magazine. Founded in 2008 by shipping industry veterans Keith Byrd and Travis Burt, TI helps companies save money on small package and freight shipping costs and has developed a formidable reputation as a community steward and sought-after employer.
Thousands of employees – 169,000 to be exact – from more than 1,600 companies were surveyed about their workplaces, according to a report from Greg Harris, president and CEO of Quantum Workplace, the company that conducted the surveys on Inc.’s behalf.
“Our findings show that honored companies had a set of baseline employee benefits,” Harris wrote. “Health insurance, dental insurance, and retirement plans aren’t extras. They’re table stakes.”
The search to find the nation’s best employers was rigorous. Transportation Impact was one of just seven honorees from North Carolina and was the only company in the state to make the cut from the logistics and transportation industry.
“By introducing an employee survey into this year’s Best Workplaces selection process, we’ve really raised the bar,” said Eric Schurenberg, Inc.’s president and editor-in-chief.
“Companies that don’t score at the very top of their peer group don’t make the cut. So, our hats are off to the winners. They all excelled at engaging their workers, making them feel appreciated, and aligning them behind a mission. And remember, that’s not just our opinion: The employees told us that themselves.”
Those and other benefits are cornerstones of the compensation packages Transportation Impact leverages to recruit top talent to its team.
“This recognition is something we are very proud of,” Byrd said. “To know that our staff are happy with their jobs and take pride in our work, and in our team, is something that resonates with our company’s leadership. We care about our people and they care about us. We work together and continue to accomplish amazing things. It’s an exciting time to be a part of Transportation Impact.”
The 2017 Inc. Best Workplaces Awards assessed applicants on the basis of benefits offered and employees’ responses to a unique, 30-question survey fielded by each of the applying companies. Responses were evaluated by the research team at Quantum Workplace. For its results to qualify, each company had to achieve a statistically significant response rate based on employee count. Survey scores account for employer size to level the playing field between small and large businesses. All companies had to have a minimum of 10 employees and to be U.S.-based, privately held, and independent – that is, not subsidiaries or divisions of other companies.
While researching the entries, Inc. and Quantum saw distinct themes develop:
TI is a 4-time Inc. 5000 honoree and has experienced nearly 50% growth in employee headcount over the last two years. The company’s average employee tenure is more than three years, largely due to perks like an aggressive 401(k) match, profit sharing, cash-balance plans, healthcare subsidy, flexible working hours (including paid summertime hours), “free lunch Fridays,” car washes, and even massages.
Earlier this year, the company launched its IMPACT1 initiative, which provides each employee with 20 hours of paid volunteer time and is part of an overall pledge to donate one percent of the company’s profits to charity, one percent of its employees’ time to community involvement and one percent of its services in goodwill to charitable organizations that would benefit from Transportation Impact’s services.
“Our people have really taken to our culture of giving back to the community,” Burt said. “That’s probably what we’re most proud of as owners – to see our employees grow to become great professionals and even better people.
“All we want to do as leaders is provide a path for them to do that, and the rest will fall into place.”
