Five Local High School Seniors Earn $2500 Scholarships

Emerald Isle, N.C. (May 28, 2020) — Five high school students from Carteret and Onslow counties, North Carolina, have been awarded $2500 scholarships towards their college tuition by local company Transportation Impact.

The successful applicants are Taylor Byrd of West Carteret High School, Brendan Lawson of Swansboro High School, and Cailyn Farley, Max Buglisi, and Grace Barnes, all of Croatan High School.

Each year, the Transportation Impact Scholarship is awarded to students from Carteret and Onslow counties who wow the scholarship committee with their high school achievements and their future goals. Each awardee must demonstrate the company’s five core values of work ethic, integrity, professionalism, passion, and perfection, and they must also have a heart for philanthropy.

“We were blown away by the candidates this year,” said Joey Sisk, Programmer and Chair of the scholarship committee. “Every one of them embodies our core values and has amazing plans for the future. We are grateful to be able to alleviate some of the financial burden of college for them.”

This year the committee comprised Joey Sisk (Chair), Jillian Farrington, Tyler Brownlow, Kelsey Plummer, Marie Bell, and Mike Fross, who represented the six TI departments, along with Travis Burt, Co-Founder, and Brian Byrd, VP Operations.

To Be Considered for Scholarship:

To be considered for the scholarship, students submitted a written application. After reviewing and scoring the applications, the committee selected the top three from each school for 30-minute interviews, which this year were conducted virtually so as to keep everyone safe. The application and interview scores were then combined to determine the winners. In all, 35 students applied for the scholarship, which was offered to Croatan, West Carteret, Swansboro, and East Carteret high schools. No applications were received from East Carteret High School.

“We were going to give the East Carteret money to the highest ranked from the other schools,” said Jillian Farrington, Senior Marketing Coordinator, Transportation Impact, “but there were two excellent applicants who tied, so we went back in our budget and pulled out more money so we could give a scholarship to both of them.”

“Reading about the achievements of these students and hearing them speak about their dreams and goals for the future was inspiring,” said Brian Byrd, VP Operations, Transportation Impact. “It’s rewarding to know that we are helping them move towards those goals. Our future is in good hands with these dedicated and intelligent young women and men.”
